ABOUT CANYON RIO
Based out of Flagstaff, Arizona, Canyon Rio has been around since
1992, when owners Donnie and Caroline Dove started the business.
With over 28 years of experience in the industry, Donnie has run
rivers from coast to coast and around the world. The company originally
focused on helping people with private Grand Canyon permits outfit
and organize their 18- to 21-day trips. Now our sister company Canyon
R.E.O. (River Equipment Outfitters) handles rentals of kayaks, canoes,
and just about any other river equipment you may need for anything
from a 1-day float to a 21-day excursion. Rentals are based out
of our warehouse in Flagstaff.
Canyon Rio Rafting runs the Upper
Salt River (class III-IV whitewater), which is in Arizona between
Showlow and Globe, off Hwy 60. The season usually extends from March
through May, when the snow in the White Mountains melts... and is
more fun than you can imagine. We offer 1-, 3- and 5-day trips.
Our 1-day trips, which cover 11 miles, include a fabulous lunch;
our multi-day trips travel into the rarely seen wilderness section
of the canyon, which is lined with amazing rock formations, saguaro
cactus forests, and lots of outstanding wildlife, including bald
eagles. These are mostly oar or paddle-raft trips. The guides who
work on the Salt are not only highly experienced but they have an
amazing passion for the river. They live by the river the entire
season and love guiding folks down this beautiful and sacred canyon.
We also offer 3-day trips on the San
Juan River and the Rio Chama.
The San Juan is located near Monument Valley on the Arizona/Utah
border (about 3.5 hours from Flagstaff). The Chama is in New Mexico,
northwest of Santa Fe (about 8 hours from Flagstaff). Both rivers
feature mostly Class II, with occasional Class III, rapids. You
can ride along on an oar raft, join a paddle raft crew, or even
paddle a ducky (inflatable kayak) if you’re adventurous. We
also offer popular kayak classes on these rivers with certified
instructors. Both of these amaxingly beautiful rivers typically
run from May to August. You camp along the river and your guides
prepare and clean up all meals.
